PILOT STUDY IN PICTURES

Kirkebakke School, Vejle

Last year, we were invited to take photos at Kirkebakke School in Vejle.

We were tasked with capturing the special atmosphere at “Event Day” – the final day of a week of activities entitled “Here we develop talent together”.

The resulting images were placed in the first grade pupils’ portfolio, so the children and their parents could relive the day’s events.

CHILDREN’S CARVING AND DRAW KNIVES FOR GAMMEL ESTRUP.

Gammel Estrup Manor Museum recently placed an order for carving and draw knives for children with special needs. The museum is in the process of incorporating the use of band knives and shaving benches into their curriculum.
We are looking forward to following their progress and hope that the children enjoy their new tools.

MAINTENANCE

Soap treating solid wood

One of my favorite surface treatments for light wood types is soap finishing.
It is a good way of preserving the light nuances of the wood, while giving an attractive matte look.

When treating with soap, it’s important to allow plenty of time so that the wood absorbs as much soap as possible.

Mix 1/2 dl of soap flakes with 1 L of boiling water and set it aside to cool.

When the soap mix has cooled, apply it to the wood using a sponge.
Here, it ‘s important to apply an even layer to the entire surface and remove any excess soap, as it may leave blotches.
After around 10 minutes, dip a cloth into the soap mixture, wring it out well and wipe the wood to remove any excess soap.
Then leave the wood to dry.
Repeat the above process as required.

For best results, treat untreated surfaces regularly. I recommend twice a week for the first three months, then once a month. To maintain a surface, one treatment every six months is sufficient – depending on use – a floor should be treated more often than a table.
For daily floor cleaning, dissolve 1 dl of soap flakes in around 5 L of hot water. We recommend waiting until the soap water has cooled before use, as it will absorb into the floor more effectively.

NOTE! With, for example, a solid wood table, it is important to dampen both the top and underside surfaces, as the table may otherwise warp.

STORYTELLING STEPS AND WORKSHOP

Space for contemplation, actvity, and togetherness

The open, chaotic common room (found in many institutions) has been divided into three areas: A screened-offcreative workshop, Storytelling Steps with space for social interaction, and an access passage that can also be used for play. The goal is to increase well-being for the children and adults at the institution. Create calm and space for contemplation, play, and togetherness.
“A joy to experience so much professional pride, attention to quality, and true love for a trade as Palmelund exudes. As well as Johannes and Birgitte’s high level of skill within woodcraft, they came with a number of creative ideas that we teachers probably wouldn’t have come up with. This made the process even more exciting and dynamic.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE!

October 1st is architecture and generations day.

Moving from a comfortable apartment in Copenhagen to the house where I was born in West Jutland has been a long road. It’s here that I live together with my husband, my children, and my parents.

It is and has been hard work finding our place in the world – for all of us.

Why do we do it? Because it’s all worth it.

It isn’t the happiness that seeing my children hear stories of a bygone era brings, but the joy of seeing the calm and patience that my parents exude when they are together with my children.

After returning to live with my parents, what I have learned as an adult is the very thing that I moved away to discover, namely to find myself. All the things that I blamed my parents and the past for while living in the apartment, I have since had to deal with.

Do something good for your children: help them to have a good relationship with their grandparents.

DESKS SHOW THE WAY

The Musikalsk Børnehave in Odense have new office desks.
The kindergarten is located on the first floor of a building located close to center of Odense, where space is very limited. The office therefore serves a number of functions. As well as a being an office, parents and children pass through the room at the start and end of each day. The teaching staff also use the room as a canteen.

The organic shapes of the desks respect and define the passage linking the door to the yard and the inner part of the kindergarten.
